About LEED
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
LEED is the standard set up by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) that applies directly to the UBC (Universal Building Code). It is a point rated system that takes existing building codes and strives for more healthy energy efficient buildings.
The USGBC is a national consensus driven, committee based, non-profit organization. It created LEED to: 1) Define “green” as a guideline and standard of measurement 2) to prevent “greenwashing” (false or exaggerated claims) 3) To promote the whole-building, integrated design processes.
Regardless of whether LEED certification is achieved. We will have designed buildings that are healthier, consume less, and provide happier occupants. This must be done for the future of our clients, our grandchildren and ourselves.
LEED NC (new construction) utilizes 6 overall areas of focus.
1. Sustainable Sites
- Protect or restore open space
- Connecting community
- Prevent pollution and impact on surrounding land
- Promote alternative transportation
- Decrease light pollution
- Reduce heat island effect
2. Water Efficiency
- Promote water use reduction
- Promote water efficient landscaping
3. Energy and Atmosphere
- Optimization of building systems
- Pollutant management
- Promote renewable energies
4. Materials and Resources
- Promote recycling
- Promote building re-use
- Promote the use of regional and recycled materials
- Promote the use of rapidly renewable resources
5. Indoor Environmental Quality
